The HESI A2 Exam – Samuel Merritt Test Review

My husband and I took the HESI A2 exam last week, and Samuel Merritt was our HESI consultant. We had heard so many great things about this person that we both needed to know what he could do to help us prepare for the exam. There were many things that we wanted to ask but didn’t want to sound arrogant or like we weren’t serious about our desire to take the A2 nursing license.

I had no problem asking my own questions. I felt confident that I understood the material and knew what I was reading. But, when it came to answering questions from the consultant, I became a bit nervous. I had heard just about everything that I wanted to hear before, so I didn’t feel comfortable answering any of the consultant’s questions. But one of them, “What are the types of questions on the test?” kept me on track.

As it turns out, there are several types of HESI questions on the exam. So, I was able to choose which one I wanted to take. The HESI consultant told me that he could show me how to answer those questions if I understood what they were talking about. I was more than impressed with the fact that he knew all of the types of HESI questions.

Then, we were instructed to do practice tests. I did pretty well on one. Then, it was time to take the actual HESI exam. I can tell you from my experience that this helped me immensely.

Since there are a lot of types of HESI questions, I didn’t even know how I was going to take them. I just sat down at my computer and began to type. I started off like I normally do and just copy and paste my way through the exam. But then I started getting really anxious when I saw that the percentage of questions I got right and those that I got wrong were decreasing. So, I just started typing faster until I was almost spelling everything.

When I got to the end, I stopped. I had been so excited to get to the end of the test that I had to type all the way through. But I just couldn’t take anymore. I needed to take some deep breaths and relax. I knew I was going to be okay.

When I took my final examination I came away very proud. I had learned so much about how the exam works. I had also gained so much knowledge about passing the HESI A2. I want to pass the test so badly. I am studying hard. I have tried so many different techniques and I think I found a combination that works great.

The last few topics were Analytical writing and Review of Written Examinations. I struggled a bit with this one but it is a topic that is usually easier to grasp. I struggled a bit with it myself. My mom is an English teacher and she was able to help me with the topics. She made me really understand the concept of Analytical writing. Reading her notes helped as well.

Overall, this was a great session. Dr. Merritt is very good at his job. There were so many things to read and so many examples to practice. It was definitely a learning experience.
